the process

When we arrive at your home, we will introduce ourselves to you, your family and your pet. We will go over the procedure making sure everyone who is present is comfortable, and we will address any concerns you have or last minute requests. You can take as much time as you want during any step of the way.

The euthanasia is done in two injections, with a few minutes between. A sedation is given first that will relax your pet, often putting them in a deep sleep. The second injection is an anesthetic that stops the heart very quickly. The process is painless and very humane.

If you wish to spend some time alone with your pet after the procedure is done, we will give you time to say goodbye in private.

Once you have made your decision to euthanize, you might want to start thinking about some details:

  • What is the best location? Ideally choose a location where your pet is calm and happy, like their favourite bed, by the fireplace, a windowsill, etc. It can be inside or outside the house. We can also meet in a public space at the beach or the park, at your discretion. It is important that you pick a place you are comfortable with as well.

  • Would you like to have a little ceremony with friends and family, or keep it more private? Would you like to prepare a few words or say a prayer? If you have young children and need advice on how to approach the subject with them, please visit our resources page. Would you like your other pets to be present?

  • Any special touches you would like to add, like your pet’s favourite blanket or toy, a calming music or scent?

  • What would you like to do with your pet's remains? If you want to bury the body, you can start thinking about a location in the yard. If you would like us to take care of their remains, we can take them with us for cremation.
