Coping with the loss

Grief is reaching out for someone who’s always been there, only to find when you need them the most, one last time, they’re gone.

Unlike friends or some family members, pets are by our side every day. Losing a pet creates a void that can hurt a lot. It is normal to feel loss, and it will take time to adjust to a new routine without your pet.

It is also normal to feel depressed, angry, or even shame. But if you feel like those symptoms are not improving after some time, I encourage you to seek help.

Suggestions to help cope with the loss:

  • Reminisce about your pet:

    • Write about them (it can also be a letter to your pet)

    • Make a scrapbook, jewellry, or piece of art dedicated to them

    • Talk to friends and family

  • Self-care:

    • Go for walks. Initially, you might want to pick a new path that you didn’t take with your pet

    • Treat yourself to a new haircut, a massage, an ice cream, etc.

  • Contact with other pets:

    • Take a friend’s pet for a walk

    • Volunteer at your local shelter

    • Only when you are ready, consider adopting another pet. It is important that you do not rush into this. If you are the type that cannot live without a pet, make sure you do not have any expectations and allow your new companion to develop their own personality and quirks.
